So on my way home from work Wednesday night, my low coolant light came on. Before the car had a chance to heat up, I pulled into a gas station and got some coolant. When I left the station, the light was off, but came on again before I got on the highway. So I pulled into another gas station an called my mom. She got to the station, helped me put coolant directly into the radiator like the owner's manual suggested, and waited while I let the car run for a bit. Next thing we know, the exhaust starts smoking like crazy.. We shut it off, and leave it there.
Turns out, it blew a head gasket. We called the dealer, even though there was no warranty, and he decided to pay for the tow, got us dealer price at a garage, and paid half the repair bill. Not only that, but he got them to have the car fixed by today, which means I don't have to put off leaving for Charlotte. :)
More good news: got a call from the chef at the Charlotte City Club; he wants me to work the Democratic national convention, with a possibility of taking a pantry chef position that might be opening up :)
So... Bad thing happened, but got fixed, and something awesome happened :). All in all, not a bad end of the week

- B. Christman
- I'm a Chef and writer who has an immense passion for what I do. I tend to rant and ramble on a variety of subjects, hence the title of this blog. The "in-training" part of the title comes from my belief that no matter how experienced a chef may be, he or she should always be training him- or herself and constantly striving to become better.

Stuff
So I spent the past two mornings packing up my things. I learned that my tiny little pontiac can hold a lot of stuff in its trunk. 4 big meat boxes, a box containing a computer monitor, a small computer stand, a couple of smaller boxes, and a bag full of clothing. I'll be sure to post pics of my car once it's all packed up for anybody interested (even though I still have doubts that people even read this piece of shit blog. Haha)
I went to the ACF Harrisburg meeting at the Hotel Hershey on Monday night. The food was delicious and the presentation by Chef Fowler and Chef Harris was awesome (molecular gastronomy stuff, in case you're curious). I sat next to Chef Gladysz, the executive chef of the hotel, and enjoyed listening to him joke around with the interns that were also at the table. I also got to talk to Chef Peffley, one of my greatest mentors and one of my favorite teachers of all time.... Can you tell that I'm kissing as yet? Haha.... In all seriousness, I really enjoyed myself at the meeting and especially enjoyed to being able to talk to Chef Peffley. He was my greatest motivation for doing well in school, and I don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for him and Chef Corle pushing me to do my best.
So there really isn't much else for me to say right now. I leave for Charlotte in 5 days and start my junior year at jWU on 9/11. Oh! I do have an interview that I need to schedule once I get to Charlotte. I'm excited about that :) I'll give more info if I get the job. Don't wanna jinx anything :p
Well, that's all. Ttfn!

Blahh
I'm so glad I have off work tomorrow. I love what I do, but I love days off more. I just wanna bum around the house, but that's probably not gonna happen.... Oh well
On a side note, Anna left for college today. She's in her way to Hickory, NC to go to Lenoir-Rhyne University for public relations. Luckily, LR is only an hour or so from where I'll be living, so I'll be able to see her every now and then... Assuming my work/school schedule allows it...

epic night
So tonight at work we got super busy. It reminded me of why I love what I do so much. The stress, the pressure, the adrenaline rush and then the amazing feeling of a job well done. I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but nothing can compare to the feeling you get after completing a busy service. Honestly, I think that's why so many chefs drink or do drugs. They're trying to recreate that feeling. Those who lose the ability to get that feeling go into a downward spiral and eventually end up burning out way before they should have. Lucky for me, I'm still young and I still get the rush from finishing a busy service.
I love what I do :)

New car
Thanks to a very generous loan (I won't say who from because I don't know who reads this), I was able to get a new (for me) car! It's a '98 Pontiac Grand Prix. It has a lot of miles in it, but it's in great shape, and I love it. :)
All I need now is a new computer and I'm all set for my junior year of college :)
